Mrs. Jolly’s Christmas Guest” script breakdown

(A general description of the script; not all details or scenes are here, but it gives you an overall picture of what it is like.)

Mrs. Jolly, a retired schoolteacher, is preparing for a visit from her son and his family on Christmas Eve. Amidst her bustle of cooking and gift wrapping, she is surprised by a visit from a next-door neighbor, Matilda, an elderly widow who wants to spend Christmas Eve with her, since they are both alone. Explaining that her family is coming soon, Mrs. Jolly overlooks her friend’s loneliness and need for spiritual counseling and hurries her out the door moments before the family arrives.

We see poor Matilda standing outside the house on the sidewalk, looking up at the warm and happy scene visible through Mrs. Jolly’s picture window, accompanied by the original song “Through The Window,” then we watch as she slowly goes to her lonely home. As Mrs. Jolly enjoys Christmas Eve with her son’s family, all is merry until a phone call from the daughter-in-law’s mother causes them to leave and spend the holiday with her instead. Upset, Mrs. Jolly prays and complains about the situation, during which we hear an original song titled “Heart’s Cry,” after which the Lord shows her that there is someone else who is alone and lonely this night, in need of comfort… her neighbor, Matilda.

Calling her to apologize for her earlier treatment of her neighbor, she invites Matilda over to spend the rest of Christmas Eve with her, and to help her eat the turkey and stuffing dinner she had prepared. After she arrives, Mrs. Jolly recognizes her need for the Lord and explains why Jesus came into the world, leading her to salvation. As this scene plays out, we hear another original song  titled “Come Dwell In My Heart.” As they are both rejoicing over her new spiritual birth, Mrs. Jolly’s son and family return unexpectedly, accompanied by the daughter-in-law’s mother, who had not felt like cooking. Mrs. Jolly introduces them all to her friend Matilda, as she informs them that she will be sharing the holiday meal and festivities with them, much to the happiness of her most special Christmas guest.
