“The Narrated Nativity”
(Nativity Story Excerpts from “Redemption In The Wings” Play)
by Frederick Passmore
copyright 2009 Sheep Laughs Publications

This is the script for the embedded “Nativity Play” scenes found in the play “Redemption In The Wings.” You may do it separately if you wish, to have a shorter traditional Christmas story, without having to learn lines. The story is told by taking elements from the various Gospels and filling in the whole picture by telling it in a narrative format. It is related in story-telling terms and not a verbatim reading of scriptures, so there is no debate about which translation of the Bible is used. The story begins as Mary is told about the impending miracle of the Incarnation, goes through the events of finding a place in Bethlehem for the Baby to be born, the shepherds being told by the Angel, the shepherds searching out and find the Baby, the worship of the Infant, and the dedication in the temple.

(Soundtrack key: NO LINES TO LEARN, the Skit Trax supply the narration, background music and sound effects.)

Length of play: 21 minutes, made up of four 5-minute (average time) segments.
Number of cast: 8; Mary, Joseph, Gabriel, the Shepherds (at least three, but can be more), the elderly Simeon and Anna, various extras, as many as you wish; the more the better.

YOU MAY ALSO ORDER THE SCRIPT AND SOUNDTRACK AT THE BOTTOM OF THIS PAGE.

All the narration, background music and sound effects are already mixed on the soundtrack. The tracks for this are already part of CD for “Redemption In The Wings,” but if you want to do JUST the Nativity Story, than you may use the isolated tracks which are on this “Narrated Nativity” Soundtrack. There are four five-minute sequences, and in between you can present live singing if you wish, to give the actors time between scenes, and to make the program last a little longer. There is an invitation to salvation at the end of the soundtrack, also.

Note: It is important that you have something to separate the skit scenes; having someone sing a Christmas song in between them is the best option. This gives your cast time to recover and prepare for the next scene.

Idea: Order extra copies of the CD for only $5 each to hand out to your main players to take home and get familiar with between rehearsals! Also as a backup.

The Narrated Nativity” script breakdown

(A general description of the script; not all details or scenes are here, but it gives you an overall picture of what it is like.)

The first segment concerns Mary being told about the imminent miracle of the Incarnation and her part in it. The scene opens with Mary in her home doing some housework, As she is busy, we see the Angel Gabriel come into the room behind her. He greets her, and explains to the frightened teen what he is there for.  There is not much need to go into detail about the script here, since it follows so closely the Scriptural account; a number of pages from the script can be previewed below to get an idea of how the events are related, and you can listen to some of each of the four 5-minute tracks, which includes background music and sound effects mixed with the professional narration. This is the primary benefit of using this script and soundtrack; the actors don’t have to learn and deliver lines, and the audience gets to hear everything said and enjoys the story more.

In the next scene, we are taken out into the silent, dark fields where some simple shepherds were tending to their flocks. To their shock and initial dismay, an angel of the Lord appears to them, and announces the birth of the long-awaited Messiah. As they fall to their faces, they get the details on where to find the new-born Baby, something not even the priests in Jerusalem were aware of. The heavens are then filled with an innumerable cloud of angels, all proclaiming the glory of God. Afterward, the shepherds hurry to nearby Bethlehem to look for the one proclaimed by the angels.

In scene three, the shepherds seek the Baby when they reach Bethlehem. At last they find the cattle stall they are occupying, and at first,  Joseph is reluctant to let in such a ragged band of men and boys. But upon hearing their story, he changes his mind, and admits them in to see the infant. Mary pulls back the cover from the manger, and as they look at Him, they begin to worship and adore Him. After spending what they felt was enough time there, and not wishing to tire Mary further, they withdraw, excited to go and share with everyone the good news that the Saviour had come into the world.

In the last track, we see forty days later after the Lord’s birth as Mary and Joseph present Him in the Temple for His dedication and circumcision. While there, the Baby is recognized by two elderly prophets who bless Him and speak prophetic words over him. At the end of the scene, the Narrator invites the audience to make room in the their hearts for the Lord.

WHAT WE OFFER:

Dramatic Plays:
Our plays range from 20 minutes all the way up to 80 minutes. They are written to engage the viewer, make them think, to impact the emotions, and present the Gospel in such a way that they perceive it as meeting the needs of their life. The aim is to bless the believer, and give the person that has never made a decision for Christ a desire to invite Him into their life.

Comedic Skits:
Our skits range in length from 5 minutes up to 20 minutes. While most are comedic in nature, using humor to impart a perspective that may not have been considered, the laughs are all tied into the message, and there is always a resolution that leads the viewer into consideration of the Truth contained in it. The humor can be enjoyed by all ages.

Soundtracks:
The soundtracks that we make to accompany the scripts add drama and emotional impact to the script’s performance. There are two different kinds offered; the type that is played at certain times during the performance to add the music and sound effects called for in the script; and second, the type that supplies all the narration, music and effects mixed together to play as the actors perform, with no lines to learn.
